Mulch helps to reduce erosion, it keeps soil moist, impedes weed growth, and provides the soil with organic matter as it breaks down. It is a protective layer of material that is spread on top of the soil providing protection and promoting healthy growth, giving your garden a "finished" look.

Compost helps sandy soils retain moisture, breaks up clay in heavy soils, adds nutrients, helps improve drainage, reduces erosion, and relieves compaction. It also makes most soils more workable for yearly planting or easy weeding. Organic matter is very important to productive soils and healthy plant growth. By incorporating compost it is possible to add life and organic matter to the soil. Adding life to the soil will replicate native soil systems where shrubs, trees, and grasslands thrived without fertilizer or pesticides.

All groundcover contains particles of the stone smaller than the size indicated all the way down to dust, these particles are referred to as "fines." There are different gradations of these products which determine the percentage of fines. The following terms describe the amount of fines in a particular product.

Minus: A lot of fines, sometimes up to 80% of the product will be smaller than the size indicated.

Screened: Some of the fines have been screened/sifted out. Typically screened rock will have 20-40% fines.

Sized: Most of the smaller products have been removed, however can contain up to 15% fines.

Washed: Products have been through a washing process to remove the fines and typically are very uniform in size.

Ton: The unit of measurement used for most stone products. A ton of groundcover is about 8 big wheelbarrows full.

Landscaping Tips

  • Define the areas to be landscaped.  Do any needed excavation work and clear the ground of all obstructions, then measure the area to determine your square footage and amount of material needed for the project.

  • Install edging around borders and between different materials making sure to countersink so the top of the edging will not be higher than the top grade of the finished project.

  • Install the weed barrier.  At this stage it is important to make sure you cover the ground complete.  Overlap 3" at the edges and 4" at the joints.  Overlap the joints so that water will pass over them and not under.  You will only get one chance to do this part properly, so please take your time.

  • Install the material in a manner that will allow you to walk across it as you go along, as opposed to walking on the weed barrier.  Rake the material out smooth as your work.  If using rock, be aware that all rock will have a "quarry powder" or fines when delivered that must be washed down with a hose to clean and enhance it's beauty.
